A native of Poland, Joanna Ciapka-Sangster has lived in Edmonton since 1992 and began performing with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra as a casual player in 1993. In 1994 Joanna was successful in an ESO international audition and became a core member of the ESO. Joanna has also performed with various Polish orchestras including the State Philharmonic Orchestra (Poznan), Baltic State Symphony Orchestra (Gdansk), Pagart Polish Performing Arts Agency (Warsaw) and Polska Filharmonia Kameralna Chamber Orchestra (Gdansk).

She is a graduate of the Academy of Music (Poznan, Poland) and has studied at the Fedele Fenaroli Association (Lanciano, Italy) and at the Suzuki Method Institute. Joanna speaks four languages – Polish, English, Italian and Russian.
