Paul Schieman - Artistic Director

Paul Schieman is the Founder, Artistic Director and Conductor of the Alberta Baroque Ensemble. Mr. Schieman studied piano, organ and oboe at McGill University in Montreal graduating with a Bachelor of Music degree With Distinction in 1978. In 1979 he accepted the position of Assistant Principal Oboe of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra as well as the position of Organist and Choir Master at St. Andrew's United Church in Edmonton.

It was shortly after accepting these positions that he formed the Alberta Baroque Ensemble. Prior to moving to Edmonton from his hometown of Montreal, Quebec, Mr. Schieman performed with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Le Studio de Musique Ancienne, Les Grand Ballets Canadienne, the McGill Chamber Orchestra and Le Petit Ensemble Baroque du Montreal. He also held positions as a church organist and taught oboe at the McGill Conservatory of Music and Vanier College in Montreal and at the University of Alberta and the Alberta College Conservatory of Music in Edmonton.

On September 19, 2005 Paul Schieman was awarded an Alberta Centennial Medal for his contribution to our community and Alberta. This gold medal is included in the Canadian Order of Precendence.

The population of Alberta is 3.2 million and only 8000 medals were presented in celebration of Alberta's 100th Anniversary.

On June 6, 2001 Paul was inducted into the City of Edmonton Cultural Hall of Fame and in September 2002 was awarded the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal.
